Matthew Chapter 28: The Resurrection and the Great Commission

🌅 Victory Over Death and the Mission Forward 🌅

“He is not here: for he is risen, as he said…” – Matthew 28:6 (KJV)

Matthew Chapter 28 concludes the Gospel with the most powerful event in Scripture—the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What appeared to be defeat in the previous chapter is now revealed as complete victory over sin and death.

The chapter begins early on the first day of the week. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary come to the tomb. Suddenly, a great earthquake occurs, and an angel descends from heaven. He rolls back the stone and sits upon it. The guards are overcome with fear and become like dead men.

The angel speaks to the women, telling them not to fear. He announces that Jesus is not in the tomb—He has risen, just as He said. This moment confirms every promise Jesus made about His death and resurrection. The empty tomb becomes the foundation of Christian faith.

As the women leave to tell the disciples, Jesus meets them personally. They worship Him, and He reassures them. He then instructs them to tell the disciples to go into Galilee, where they will see Him.

Meanwhile, the guards report what happened to the religious leaders. Instead of accepting the truth, the leaders attempt to cover it up by bribing the soldiers to spread a false story. This reveals that even undeniable evidence does not change hardened hearts.

The chapter concludes with the Great Commission. Jesus meets His disciples on a mountain in Galilee. He declares that all authority in heaven and earth has been given to Him. He then commands them to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to observe His commands.

He ends with a powerful promise: He will be with them always, even unto the end of the world.

Matthew 28 is not just an ending—it is a beginning. The resurrection confirms Christ’s authority, and the commission sends His followers into the world with purpose.
