Matthew Chapter 06: Prayer, Priorities, and Trust in God

🙏 True Devotion and Kingdom Priorities 🙏

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Matthew Chapter 6 continues the Sermon on the Mount with a sharp focus on inward devotion. Jesus shifts attention from public actions to private motives. He exposes a critical issue: doing the right things for the wrong reasons.

At the core, this chapter addresses three areas—giving, praying, and fasting. Each one reveals the same principle. God is not impressed by outward display. He looks at the heart.

Jesus warns against hypocrisy. He calls out those who perform religious acts to be seen by others. Their reward, He says, is limited to human recognition. In contrast, He teaches that true devotion happens in secret. God sees what others cannot.

“Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them…” – Matthew 6:1 (KJV)

The Lord’s Prayer appears in this chapter. It is not just a prayer to repeat. It is a model. It teaches structure, focus, and reverence. It begins with honoring God and aligns the heart with His will before addressing personal needs.

Short sentences sharpen the point. Start with God. Submit your will. Trust His provision.

Jesus then transitions into the subject of priorities. He speaks directly about treasure, vision, and loyalty. Where your treasure is, your heart will follow. No one can serve two masters. The choice between God and worldly pursuit must be clear.

The chapter concludes with a direct command against worry. Jesus points to nature as evidence of God’s care. Birds are fed. Flowers are clothed. Therefore, His people can trust Him.

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow…” – Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

Matthew 6 delivers a focused message. Live for God, not for appearance. Set your priorities right. Trust Him completely.

📜 Structure of Matthew Chapter 6

Verses 1–4: Giving in Secret

Jesus teaches that giving should not be done for public attention. Those who give to be seen already have their reward. Instead, giving should be done quietly, without drawing attention.

This principle protects the heart. It shifts the focus from self to God. True generosity is measured by sincerity, not visibility.

Verses 5–15: Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer

Jesus addresses prayer with the same concern. Avoid empty repetition and public display. Instead, pray privately and sincerely.

He then provides a model prayer. It begins with honoring God, then aligns with His will, and finally presents personal needs. It also emphasizes forgiveness. Receiving forgiveness is tied to giving it.

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” – Matthew 6:14 (KJV)

Verses 16–18: Fasting with the Right Motive

Fasting, like giving and prayer, must be done with the right intention. Jesus warns against outward signs meant to gain sympathy or admiration.

Instead, fasting should be personal and focused on God. The reward comes from Him, not from others.

Verses 19–24: Treasures in Heaven

Jesus teaches about eternal priorities. Earthly treasures are temporary. They can be lost or destroyed. Heavenly treasures are secure and lasting.

He then connects treasure to the heart. What you value shapes your direction. He also makes it clear that no one can serve both God and money.

This section calls for a clear decision. Choose your master wisely.

Verses 25–34: Do Not Worry

Jesus directly confronts anxiety. He uses simple examples from nature to show God’s provision. If God cares for birds and flowers, He will care for His people.

Worry does not solve problems. It reveals a lack of trust. Instead, Jesus calls for focus on today and trust for tomorrow.

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God…” – Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

This final section brings the chapter together. Right priorities remove unnecessary anxiety.
