Commandment 7 – Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.” — Exodus 20:14 KJV

The seventh commandment protects the sacred covenant of marriage. God designed marriage as a holy union between a man and a woman, rooted in faithfulness, trust, and lifelong commitment. This command guards purity, loyalty, and the stability of the family.

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” — Hebrews 13:4 KJV

Adultery is not merely a physical act—it is a violation of covenant, trust, and God’s design.

What This Commandment Means

This commandment emphasizes:

  • Faithfulness in marriage
  • Sexual purity in thought and action
  • Respect for covenant commitments

Jesus again deepened the command beyond outward behavior to the condition of the heart:

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.” — Matthew 5:28 KJV

Purity begins internally. The battle is first fought in the mind.

How It Protects Us

Observing this commandment protects individuals, marriages, and society:
