¹ And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.
² And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.
³ And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;
⁴ Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the Lord.
⁵ And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.
⁶ And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
⁷ And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
⁸ And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
⁹ Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
¹¹ Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.
¹² Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
¹³ But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.
¹⁴ And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
¹⁵ For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
¹⁶ And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.
¹⁷ Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.
¹⁸ Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the Lord.
🌄 Divine Separation and the Call to Walk by Faith 🌄
“And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward.” – Genesis 13:14
Genesis Chapter 13 presents a pivotal moment in the relationship between Abram and Lot. After God blesses Abram with wealth and land, conflict arises between the herders of Abram and Lot. Rather than allowing strife to grow, Abram humbly offers Lot the choice of the land, demonstrating both wisdom and selflessness. Lot chooses the fertile plains of Jordan, and Abram is left with the less desirable land. Yet, God reassures Abram that He will give him the land and multiply his descendants.
This chapter teaches us about trusting God’s provision, humbling ourselves in the face of conflict, and recognizing that God’s promises are not dependent on circumstances.
📜 Structure of Genesis Chapter 13
Verses 1–4: Return from Egypt and Return to Worship
Abram, now wealthy in cattle, silver, and gold, returns from Egypt to the place between Bethel and Hai, where he had previously built an altar. There, he calls upon the name of the Lord. This marks a return to spiritual focus after his detour in Egypt (Genesis 12), emphasizing the importance of reconnecting with God after a season of missteps.
Reflection: When we stray, God welcomes us back to the altar. Have you returned to your place of worship lately?
Verses 8–9: Abram’s Humble Solution
Abram, the elder and spiritual leader, takes the initiative to make peace. He tells Lot, “Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee…” and offers him first choice of the land. This act of humility and trust in God models servant leadership and peacekeeping.
Verses 10–13: Lot Chooses the Well-Watered Plain
Lot lifts his eyes and chooses the lush Jordan Valley, comparing it to Eden and Egypt. However, it includes Sodom—“men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.” Lot walks by sight, not by faith, setting the stage for his future troubles.
Verses 14–18: God Reaffirms His Promise to Abram
After Lot separates, God tells Abram to lift his eyes and look in every direction. God promises all the land to Abram and his descendants forever, and that his seed will be as the dust of the earth. Abram responds in faith, moving to Hebron and building another altar to the Lord.
💡 Key Themes
✨ Faith Over Sight
While Lot chooses what looks good, Abram trusts God to give him what is best. This teaches us that walking by faith brings greater reward than walking by worldly wisdom.
✨ Humility Brings Peace
Abram’s willingness to let Lot choose first shows that peace and integrity are more important than personal gain.
✨ God Rewards Obedience
After Abram honors God and others, the Lord reaffirms His covenant, expanding the promise and calling Abram to look and walk the land.
👤 Key People
- Abram – Demonstrates leadership, humility, and growing faith.
- Lot – Makes a choice based on appearance, not discernment, leading him toward future judgment.
- The LORD – Reaffirms His covenant and responds to faith with revelation and promise.
🔥 Why This Chapter Matters
Genesis 13 shows that God’s promises unfold in response to faith and obedience. When we choose peace and trust God’s provision, He gives far more than we could take by force. Lot’s short-term vision brings long-term trouble, but Abram’s long-term trust brings eternal blessing.
💭 Let’s Reflect
- Have you ever chosen something based on appearance instead of prayerful wisdom?
- How can you be a peacemaker in a world full of strife?
- Are you walking by faith today, even if the land looks barren?
