Exodus 3 marks a transformative moment in the story of God’s deliverance of Israel. Here, Moses encounters God in the form of a burning bush, a symbol of divine presence, holiness, and purpose. This chapter introduces God’s calling of Moses to lead His people out of Egyptian bondage and sets the stage for the miracles and revelations that will follow. It’s a chapter of obedience, fear, and the reassurance of God’s power.

📜 Structure of Exodus Chapter 3

Verses 1–6: The Burning Bush and Moses’ Awe

Moses is tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, on Mount Horeb. Suddenly, he sees a bush engulfed in flames but not consumed by the fire. God calls out to Moses, instructing him to remove his sandals, recognizing the holiness of the ground. This encounter highlights:

  • Divine presence in ordinary circumstances: God can appear in the mundane moments of life.
  • Holiness and reverence: Moses’ instinctive awe reflects the need for respect before God’s glory.
Verses 7–12: God Reveals His Plan for Israel

God tells Moses that He has observed the suffering of His people in Egypt. He promises deliverance and calls Moses to lead them to freedom. Moses expresses doubt about his ability to confront Pharaoh, but God reassures him:

  • God will equip Moses for the task.
  • Moses’ fear and hesitation are normal, yet God’s plan does not depend on human strength.
Verses 13–22: God’s Name and the Promise of Deliverance

Moses asks what he should say when the Israelites ask who sent him. God responds with the profound revelation: “I AM THAT I AM” (Yahweh), emphasizing His eternal, self-existent nature. God explains that He will use Moses to free the Israelites and lead them to a land flowing with milk and honey. Key points include:

  • God’s sovereignty: His name signifies eternal power and unchanging purpose.
  • Assurance of divine authority: God’s presence guarantees the success of His plan.
  • Promise of provision and protection: God outlines the miraculous signs Moses will use to demonstrate His power.
